Introduction
So Much Music, So Little Time
Okay, here's the story. Before my first trip to NYC (when I wasn't living here) I tried to do some research on the record and compact disc stores so I'd be ready to do some diggin' by the time I arrived. At that time there really wasn't much information out there. So the idea here is to create an ideal web resource for like-minded (click on "Site Designer" over there at the left is you want some information about me) music lovers.
Since there's really no definition for "independent" or "alternative" I kind of came up with my own. Look around this site and you'll get the idea what it is.

So, the focus of this site is on the record and CD stores in the lower part of the Manhattan borough of New York City...that's where most of the stores are. You'll find tons of other valuable info here--travel tips, tourist tips, information on stores in other areas, etc.--but I'm guessing that most of you will want to spend just a small chunk of your time here making one swing through the heart of the area with the highest concentration of stores (unless, of course, you're DJ Shadow).
If you have time my "Printable Store List" is organized so that you could start with the first store and do a walking tour of all the stores by working your way down the list. It's organized so you can hit every store and do a minimal amount of backtracking and subway riding. (You'll, of course, need to do some planning and follow the list in conjunction with your map(s).)

Don't assume that this list is by any means comprehensive. Many stores were not included. Some, for one reason or another, just didn't seem worth the effort (Accidental, Groundhog, most of the stores in the other four boroughs). Some seemed to concentrate almost strictly on house/IDM 12-inch singles and just weren't that interesting to me (Satellite, Heartbeat). Sadly many, many have closed (Throb, Midnight, Mute, Nervous, Strange, Lethal, Sound & Fury, Stooz, Smash, Venus, etc.) However, feel assured that I've made every effort to include everything you'd want to know here.
You can get involved here. Make a contribution to the site, tell me how to make it better, convince me to include your store, send me some swag.
