My indie/alternative thing all started with the purchase of a Parliament Funkadelic album. They looked like a Black version of Kiss and were the most interesting-looking thing I could find (in the coolest of the Bellingham, Washington bong/record stores). Then it was the Pistols, Psychedelic Furs, Black Flag, Oingo Boing, the Velvets, and I was off.
As for web site design I suppose it's painfully obvious that I'm self-taught. Inspiration was provided by another self-taught designer who does the "Flex Your Head" radio show (17 years running) and the "Flex Your Head"
web site. He is now an official career designer.
Here are some books I've been reading:
- Milk It!
- We Rock So You Don't Have To
- Heavier Than Heaven
- Straight Outta Bristol
- Radio On
- Our Band Could Be Your Life
- We Owe You Nothing
- American Hardcore: A Tribal History
- Get In The Van
- All Ages
- Generation Ecstacy
- Looking for the Perfect Beat
- 40 Watts From Nowhere
- Nothing Feels Good
- Loser
- Baboon Dooley: Rock Critic
- Yes Yes Y'all
Here are some movies you should watch:
- Dig!
- Standing in the Shadows of Motown
- I Am Trying to Break Your Heart
- 24 Hour Party People

- Decline of the Western Civilization (I, II, and III)
- X: The Unheard Music
- Rhyme and Reason
- Detroit Rock City
- Almost Famous
